A Fun, Fearless Weekend

IMG_6036

Ugh, our 20’s; that in between from having a structured life (school) to choosing what we do with our time. Some of us went down the path of awesome-job-out-of-college to marriage and family, while others of us have dabbled here and there, finding our place in this world. Then there’s me, who can’t fathom sitting behind a desk in a traditional 9 to 5 (regardless of the financial stability) and cant understand how in college I could handle a full course load, work a few jobs, volunteer, and still have fun on the weekends… and now I can barley concentrate on two things at once. When I saw an ad about Cosmopolitan magazine’s Fun Fearless Life conference coming up, I thought that (while honestly I was skeptical about it being cheesy) why not? It starts with the letter F! I asked a few friends if they were willing to go to it, but no one was able to. I let the idea of it go to the back of my mind. Continue reading →

JILLIE BEAN

IMG_0010

I met Jill a couple of years ago in the studio where I used to work out.  She was in living in LA for the summer… around the corner from the studio.  With a free spirit and easy going personality, a friendship wasn’t hard to begin.  She has her own colorful style, which I haven’t seen on anyone else, and she’s very in tune with spirituality and healthy living.  It amazes me that she’s younger than I am but has a mature aura surrounding her.  Her beautiful face and gorgeous curly hair (I’m so jealous!) has been in ads for Nike and Converse as well as graced the pages of Teen Vogue, Elle Girl Japan, Nylon Magazine, Seventeen, and The Source… so, naturally, I had to have her get in front of my camera. JASON CLARKSON-SWIFT

From a little village in Michigan emerged Jason.  After being allowed to listen to “secular” music in middle school, he knew music was his life.  Originally, Jason went to school to become a choir teacher but realized that his personality best deserves to be in front of the audience instead of behind the scenes.  Since then, he has moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of producing his own shows and has interviewed some of music’s biggest stars.  Music is his religion, and he buys at least 3 albums a week.  He’s also starting a blog titled “My Big Gay Music Blog.”  So, naturally I had to flip the script and turn the mic on him. THE JENNIFER BRAND

IMG_9477_2

The only way you haven’t seen Jennifer dance is if you don’t have a television.  She has been dancing since she was 4 when her mother put her in a tap class.  Since then she has danced on tour (Lil’ Wayne), in movies (Get On up, School Dance), on award shows, and in music videos.  She’s worked all over the country and lived in Detroit, Atlanta, New York, and LA.  Riding on faith, Jennifer has decided to move back into her musical roots.  Her grandfather was a trumpet player for The Funk Brothers back in the original Motown days and her parents met in their high school band. While dance is still a huge part of her life, she’s practicing everyday on her blue bass guitar.  Her next goal is to form a funk band. Continue reading →

KETCHUP KYLIE

IMG_8358

Cheese.  Kylie and I both love cheese (instant best friends).  It makes sense because she originally hails from the state where her football team wears cheese hats (we’re not friends when football is on. GO NINERS!).  So why “ketchup?”  Kylie spent her first year out of college riding across the country in the Oscar Mayer wienermobile.  Yes, the wienermobile!  While you wished you were an Oscar Mayer wienie, she lived in one.  Out of thousands of applicants, only 12 are picked every year.  There are around 300 people who have ever had this job, so Kylie’s kind of a big deal. ALI PEARL

While looking for some pictures to show my friends of my work, I dug into my archives and found the pictures I took of Ali.  I’ve known Ali for years, since middle school… but it wasn’t until high school that we began to get close.  And for a few years during college, she and a couple of our other close friends and I were pretty much inseparable.  That’s where we came up with the nicknames of Pearl.  It all stemmed from our favorite Will Ferrell Funny or Die skit, “The Landlord”, where Will’s landlord is this little girl named Pearl.  We just started calling each other that and somehow we all know which one of us were talking about when using it.  It’s amazing, I know. DISNEY

Football is a pretty big deal to me.  I rarely miss watching games.  Every now and then there are some exceptions.  Yesterday I just couldn’t say no to a trip to Disneyland and California Adventures.  It literally is the happiest place on Earthifornia… mostly because of their deliciously sugary ways and awesome photo ops.  I’m actually weary of traveling with my “camera camera” to places where I’d rather just not carry anything at all (RIDES!) and places where there are a million people (and some with strollers, THEY’RE EVERYWHERE!) but I decided to grab my camera and keep it simple with my fixed 50 and hit the road.  Not before putting on my 49ers shirt, of course. STORM

IMG_7551

After a horribly long time sitting on my shelf in my closet (I am ashamed), I took my camera out and hit Downtown Los Angeles’s Art District; one of, if not my favorite, places to shoot. Along for the ride came my good friend Storm and her friend Jaxy.  Yes, Storm is her actual birth name!  Besides being one of the sweetest girls ever, she’s always down for anything and has an infectious laugh. Did I mention she’s in a band? Course she is. All cool kids are.  Check out Figs Vision!

My favorite part of our photoventure was stumbling across (what we assumed to be) an abandoned car.  Made for the best prop ever.  Enjoy!
